The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is a world-renowned research center dedicated to pioneering discoveries in vision science and translating these insights into novel therapies for blinding diseases. We are seeking a highly experienced and exceptionally motivated Research Associate to join our dynamic Translation Group, led by the distinguished Dr. Bence György. This full-time position (100%) offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to cutting-edge cell therapy translational research. Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design, plan, and execute complex in vitro and ex vivo experiments related to cell therapy for ocular diseases, including primary cell isolation, maintenance, and differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into relevant ocular cell types.
  • Perform a wide range of molecular and cellular biology techniques, such as PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry.
  • Develop and optimize experimental protocols, ensuring reproducibility and scientific rigor.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data effectively, drawing conclusions and making recommendations for future research directions.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all experiments, data, and laboratory procedures in an electronic lab notebook system, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Manage laboratory resources, including ordering reagents, maintaining equipment, and ensuring the laboratory operates efficiently and safely according to established SOPs and safety guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with other members of the Translation Group, as well as with scientists from other IOB research groups and external partners, fostering a highly interactive and supportive research environment.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific literature, technologies, and advancements in cell therapy, ophthalmology, and translational research, continuously seeking opportunities for innovation and improvement.
  • Actively participate in group meetings, journal clubs, and scientific seminars, presenting findings and engaging in constructive scientific discussions.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting, with a strong focus on cell therapy, stem cell biology, or translational research.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in aseptic cell culture techniques, including the handling of primary cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
  • Solid practical experience with a variety of molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, qPCR, Western blotting) and cell-based assays (e.g., immunofluorescence, flow cytometry).
  • Proven ability to design experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and interpret complex scientific data independently.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong commitment to producing high-quality, reproducible results.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly articulate scientific concepts and findings.
  • A highly motivated, proactive, and collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., GraphPad Prism, FlowJo) and general laboratory information management systems.
