Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for a diverse portfolio of clients, encompassing cutting-edge innovations in various chemical fields.
- Conduct comprehensive patentability searches, freedom-to-operate analyses, and validity assessments to provide strategic advice to clients.
- Engage directly with inventors, researchers, and in-house counsel to understand novel chemical inventions and translate complex technical details into robust patent claims.
- Support senior attorneys and partners in preparing for and attending opposition and appeal hearings before the UKIPO and EPO.
- Contribute to due diligence projects, intellectual property portfolio management, and strategic client counseling under supervision.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in patent law, particularly within chemistry and related scientific disciplines, and actively participate in internal training sessions.
- Develop strong client relationships through effective communication and a proactive approach to understanding their commercial objectives.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues across different technical teams and offices to deliver integrated IP solutions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Currently part-way through qualification as a UK and/or European Patent Attorney, demonstrating consistent progress and a commitment to achieving full qualification.
- Possess a strong academic background, typically a First-Class or 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a closely related scientific discipline. A postgraduate qualification (MSc, PhD) would be highly advantageous but is not essential.
- Demonstrable experience working within a patent practice or in an in-house IP department, with exposure to drafting and prosecution of chemical patents.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical and legal concepts clearly and concisely.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, coupled with meticulous attention to detail.
- A genuine passion for intellectual property law and a keen interest in a broad range of chemical technologies.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Eligibility to work in the UK and based in or willing to relocate to Manchester.
