Key Responsibilities
- Drafting and prosecuting patent applications (UK, EP, and International) with a primary focus on high-tech and electronics inventions, ensuring precision and strategic alignment with client objectives.
- Conducting comprehensive freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses, validity, and infringement assessments, providing clear, actionable advice to clients.
- Managing and strategically developing diverse patent portfolios for a range of clients, from multinational corporations to innovative SMEs.
- Providing expert legal advice on complex IP matters, including patentability, scope of protection, and enforcement strategies.
- Engaging directly with inventors and clients to understand their technical innovations, commercial goals, and IP needs, building strong, lasting relationships.
- Performing in-depth technical analysis of complex inventions across various high-tech disciplines, translating intricate technical details into robust patent claims.
- Assisting with contentious IP matters, including opposition and appeal proceedings before the UK IPO and EPO, where applicable.
- Contributing to business development initiatives and firm-wide knowledge sharing, helping to maintain the firm's position as a market leader.
- Mentoring and guiding junior attorneys or technical assistants, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment (especially for Fully Qualified candidates).
- Staying abreast of developments in patent law and relevant technologies to ensure the provision of up-to-date and effective advice.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Must be either a Part Qualified or Fully Qualified UK and/or European Patent Attorney (CPA/EPA).
- Possess a strong academic background, ideally a degree (2:1 or above) in Electronics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Telecommunications, or a closely related high-tech discipline.
- Demonstrable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, with a significant portion of this experience gained within the high-tech and electronics sectors.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal and technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of dissecting intricate technical challenges and formulating effective legal strategies.
- A meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work under challenging deadlines.
- Ability to independently manage a diverse and demanding caseload, prioritizing tasks effectively to meet client and firm objectives.

- Membership with relevant professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and/or the European Patent Institute (EPI).
